Had a bit of a busy week, so I'm finally getting to post this now.

Anyway, last Saturday, I saw Silversun Pickups at Pipeline Cafe.

Ridiculous. My ears are still recovering. They're ringing now, so that's good.

But it was awesome! And I got rail! In front of Nikki! The opening band was this band called Satellite Grey and they freaking rocked the joint. Local music, woot. I've got their first album "Mirror Transmission" and it is NICE. I hope to catch them live in concert sometime.

I didn't score a setlist, but that's alright. They opened with Growing Up is Getting Old, which was awesome. Nikki on bass! In front of me! She's so adorable. Then, I think it was Well Thought Out Twinkles...then The Royal We somewhere in there. They did do Kissing Families which was lovely. Yelling the lyrics back at Brian was pretty glorious. Speaking of Brian, he's pretty ridiculous live. They all are. But I think him even more so. Cause Joe is all bent over his keyboards, Nikki's all stoic, but cute. And Chris...well wait. Chris is mental on the drums too. Hair all going over the place. That guy is a beast. I swear on the last song (I think Common Reactor) he hit his cymbal (that was set way high) so hard, the stand swayed a bit. Chris is mental.

Brian gave a shout out to a local band called the Jump Offs, who he had seen at First Friday the day before the gig. That was pretty sweet. I've caught The Jump Offs twice (opening for Of Montreal and MGMT), and they're good. They're supposed to be releasing an album next month, I believe.

Back to SSPU---they also played Substitution, It's Nice to Know You Work Alone, Catch & Release, There's No Secrets This Year followed by The Royal We, Kissing Families (sweet!). There's a few more songs in there, but they closed the main set with Panic Switch and Lazy Eye. I recorded some of Lazy Eye just to capture how ridiculous it all was. Mainly Chris going mental on the drums because you can't really capture that in a still shot. Mostly for experience sake. The sound on that was pretty crappy. But ZOMG, Panic Switch and Lazy Eye. Lazy Eye. I died. I sort of regretted recording when Brian screams out "SUNSHINE". But I was right with him, haha. Amazing.

He played Rusted Wheel as the first encore, which made me giggle as I mentioned that guy who wanted Brian to play that at the music hall. [Then there was some banter between him and Nikki. Earlier (I forget during which song), she would point at him to take over then he'd be like pointing back at her. And that would go on, haha. After the first encore, Brian starts talking, asking what Nikki had done during the day, commenting on her flower in her hair. Asked her why she was so sunburned. She said she and Joe had gone to Diamond Head and got a certificate. Then he went on a jokey little bit about how we need to support our local ABC Store (which is a touristy chain of stores in Waikiki...the joke being, if you throw a rock from one ABC Store, you'd hit the next one).

The next encore was...Creation Lake. Which, to my understanding, is not played much. So, it was quite lovely seeing Nikki take the mic. I was hoping for Melatonin, and kicked myself for not mentioning it when I saw them Friday. They closed everything out with Common Reactor, complete with Brian playing around with his pedals and effects, and Chris nearly knocking his cymbal stand over.

It was really exciting and really awesome. I only wish I had more time to acclimate myself with the songs better, but I knew enough...but I still really really loved the gig. Really solid. I have no ears. I think if I had one complaint...sometimes the vocals can get lost (especially Nikki's)...and the keyboard too. Sort of miniscule, because it didn't really matter in the end.

I made my way to the merch table to get a shirt. That was the plan anyway. Once there, I realized they were selling VINYL. 180 gram limited edition vinyl (of Carnavas and Swoon, don't know if Pikul was 180 gram. But it was there for vinyl). I spent $35 on vinyl for Carnavas and Swoon. I also ran into a guy I initially labeled as "Setlist dude." And he said he heard that the band might be signing autographs around the Will Call area. So I ended up wandering around there with a few of my friends. Just tagged around for a little while, though. Decided to leave. I mean, I had already met them the day before, and Brian had his arm around me (which was nice) and I got an autograph and pictures, and the rail...AND vinyl, so it was enough to call it a night.

I have a renewed faith that Hawaii will get good concerts. :) I'm still hoping for Interpol. :D

Yesterday afternoon, I had a date with the Silversun Pickups. The local alternative radio station (STAR 101.9) announced that listeners could win a chance to watch SSPU in a intimate acoustic session at RoadRunner Music Hall. So, I signed up, not sure how the whole thing worked. Wasn't sure if I'd get in, actually. But I did! So, score. What follows here is that whole adventure:

Before I left the house, I was sort of hoping to use my dad's huge truck because I think the transmission on my car is going. I thought he'd be home, but he was out getting something when I rushed down the stairs to go. So, my mom knows my car's sort of testy, and says to wait, but I HAD to go because I had to be at the radio station at a certain time.

So, the car (thankfully) and me got to the area safe and sound. Took me forever to find parking. And I WAS late, and thought maybe I could try to get in anyway. So, I meet up with my friend Chelsea and we try to find the place. But not before we saw Brian hanging out with some guy...Joe was there too, but I didn't see him at first. So, Chelsea and I walk into Dole Cannery and the place is bloody confusing. So we walk back out and decide to ask Brian (cause were were like, "ZOMG, Is that him? IT'S HIM!") where the station was. Seemed plausible enough, seeing as they'd be performing there. So, his friend (maybe it was roadie?) told us.

And we got lost anyway, but eventually found the place, and they let us in! Score. I guess they set the time to be there at 2:30 to make sure the stragglers (like me) would make it anyway.

The room itself was pretty small. There were couches and stuff. If we'd showed up earlier, we could've gotten one. But oh well.

Anyway, the gig! It was nice, the band actually walked past me to get to the stage. Nikki is super adorable! I like, wanted to hug her, but I didn't. Didn't want to weird her out too much.

I was really impressed with how they sounded acoustically. I guess I didn't know it would translate so well that way? But it was really lovely. Brian was hilarious. Just a lot of banter between him and Nikki (and Joe occasionally). Example between Brian and Nikki:

Brian: *asks the audience what's happened in the year or so since they came* *mentions that the US president was from Hawaii* *goes on*
Nikki: What are you talking about?
Brian: *in a soft, whispery voice* Obaaaama. Barack Obama..

There was also a point before they started where Nikki's chair was set too high. And Brian goes, "Why are you sitting so high?" So Nikki tries to adjust the seat, so she's playing around with the handle and bobbing up and down on the seat trying to get it down, and Brian goes, "That's it, sloooowly, slooowly, up...down...." (you get the jist, haha) It was hilarious.

He also picked on Joe a little. At the beginning of It's Nice to Know You Work Alone, Joe does that sound on the keyboard, but this time, it didn't come out, so Brian stops the song and announces to the audience that Joe plays that sound at the beginning that he loves. And Nikki comments that she thought her bass sounded too loud. And Chris is like, "Are we ready yet?" So Brian asks the audience to let out a big cheer when Joe plays what he calls, "the noise."

Brian: Don't you want the NOISE?
Audience: YEAH!
Brian: (to Joe) No pressure.
Joe: *shakes head* *chuckles*

So, when they restarted Work Alone, Joe successfully plays his part, and Brian's all like, in the moment, and of course we all cheer. I hope it's on the video that they post later on. It was really hilarious. Man, I can keep going.

I think I can fall for this band even more. They were so funny, so nice. Brian's actually from Hawaii (Kailua) so he would ask what's happened since. We had a local one-dollar theater close, and he mentioned that. "Restaurant Row closed? [i]Bullsh*t[/i]." And he mentioned how we were getting all these good gigs. And everyone laughed because obviously they are one of those bands, and he was like a little embarrassed, and laughed about that.

Um, after the set, there was a autograph/picture session. So, thinking that that would take place by the stage, Chelsea, myself and these two people we met there lined up at what we thought was the end of the line. Nope. WE WERE IN THE FRONT. FIRST!

So, we got an autographed poster thing. AND I GOT A PICTURE.

I told Nikki that she did awesome. And I think Chelsea was talking to Chris briefly about drums. Then Chelsea and I walked out and were waiting on our new friends, when this guy came out and asked us if we wanted the scrap of paper he was holding. It was the setlist, like handwritten. Of COURSE I took it! Man, I guess I can start a setlist collection now? Hahaha.

Then a girl I met at the BOH concert caught up with me. So random! She even won the Les Paul guitar that was autographed by the band:

Anyway, it was pretty freaking awesome. They were so friendly, and sweet. Christie (my friend who won the guitar) posed with them and Brian like put his hand on top of her head, then it was covering her eyes, and her face....that was pretty funny. Man, I can't get over how laid back it all was. I mean, yeah, it was SSPU, but it was like your buddies or something. I wasn't nervous around them at all. I was so glad to go to this thing! I can't wait for tomorrow. Hopefully I'll get rail, but I'll definitely get on Nikki's side.

Oasis -- I guess this is really it, then.

Stand By Me --- Nobody knows...they way it's gonna be

So, I'm actually going to (again) skip doing homework-y things and will focus on something that has just recently happened.

Apparently, Oasis has actually, seriously split up.

Now, being an Oasis fan as long as I have (going on 14 years), hearing rumors of break ups or actually having them "break up" (I cite the numerous times in the 90s and beyond) only to get back together again...well, naturally, I took this with a grain of salt.

So I went along, thinking it wasn't *that* serious, even though I had heard of the major breakdown of Noel and Liam's relationship. I just assumed it would be "okay." I then amused myself by seeing 15 year olds freak out over the break up, when I was like that at that age when Nate Atkinson told me Oasis had split up then. This was after Jason Conklin had told me and I thought he was just trying to rile me up.

Needless to say, the 15 year old me was gutted then. But fast forward many many years later, I felt like I was a veteran of Oasis breakups. I foolishly hoped that it was trivial.

But after a little more research, and seeing my fellow Oasis friends post their reactions...well, my lackadaisical attitude then began to shift. It's taking a while to sink in. At first, I think I was a little "eh." But the more I thought about it, thought about how Oasis affected my life, and how I used to love their music so much (now having a bit of a renaissance again)---well, I began feeling fairly gutted.

Say what you want about Oasis, or the Gallagher brothers in general. They're egotistical, big mouthed, etc etc. I know that. I know they can be and have been jerks. I know that they blatantly rip off their musical heroes (and they actually rip off the good ones...and hey, at least he admits to ripping off those guys). I'm aware of their faults and limitations. They weren't going to be like Radiohead. They were just going to be a straight up rock and roll band. They were going to be Oasis.

That's big guitars, big hooks, anthems. They inspired thousands. Millions.

They touched the life of one insecure 15 year old and told her it "would be okay." They singlehandedly pushed that girl into loving the music, into getting into rock and roll. Although the affection for Oasis was eclipsed by other bands, she never lost that spot in her heart for Oasis.

I've often wondered how it would feel like to have a band I followed so closely, that I loved so much, split up. Many people have seen their favorite bands split, and talk about how anguishing it is. I've not had to experience that. Not until now.

And it does. Suck. To be honest, it's sort of an inconvenience right now, but I feel it may intensify. Especially since I've never seen them live...now I wish I had gone to see them in Vegas or...somewhere in California...somewhere.

I have no doubt that Oasis could reunite again. Just not for a long while. At least, the world will finally hear a true Noel Gallagher solo record.

I think I'll listen to Oasis for the majority of the weekend. Remember the good times, and hope for better.

I remember the first time I heard Band of Horses, and I remember who turned me on to them. It was 2 years ago, and a friend I knew off of Interpol Online (a forum I regularly post on) told me about them. It was just a normal MSN chat. I remember was downloading as I chatted with her. At one point, she pointed out how the drumming and general aesthetic on "Our Swords" was sort of similar to the effect on Interpol's "Stella Was a Diver and She Was Always Down." It did have the same sort of floaty feeling...

I'm grateful to that introduction, because Band of Horses became one of my favorite bands that day (not because of that tidbit).

The sound: big. The emotion: real. I knew I wanted to see this band live. The likelihood of it seemed distant, though. I thought I would just see them whenever I make the move to the mainland.

Fast forward a year or two later after that introduction. Hello, Twitter. Hello BAMP Projects. Hello a tweet that says "Band of Horses, August 23rd, Pipeline Cafe. Get Stoked."

Cue me spazzing silently (I think) in my room in the early hours of the morning.

So, this past Sunday, I saw Band of Horses at Pipeline Cafe. And it was awesome. Matt Costa, who I haven't listened to much, admittedly, was the opener. He was very good and I was impressed. I mean, I knew he was good, and I think I'll listen to him more now. My brother's a big fan, so I'll nick some stuff off him, I suppose.

Anyway, Band of Horses. Goshdangawesome.

Ben sounds amazing live. And the band as a whole are solid. Even though they had some technical difficulties, they carried on like pros.

My favorite moments:

1. Them opening with "The First Song" with Ben on the lap steel guitar. I think I would've preferred "Is There a Ghost?" as an opener, but First Song was nice. I did get my wish 2 songs later, though. :D I really really wanted to hear 'Is There a Ghost?" live because it builds so awesome. And I wasn't disappointed. Definitely one of my favorite moments in the concert. Actually, that whole beginning four ("The First Song"/"The Great Salt Lake"/"Is There a Ghost?"/"Weed Party") was sweet.

2. Ben coming out to the crowd during Weed Party. I didn't expect that, but that was pretty cool.

3."No One's Gonna Love You" and "The Funeral". So. amazing. live. I got No One on video, but like a retard, I turned the camera, so the end looks like it's on its side. So, I don't know if I'll get it up to YouTube.

4. Islands on the Coast is very good live. Actually, pretty much everything they performed translates well live. Of course, it's way better because it IS live.

5. "Our Swords" is performed on two basses and the drums. Awesome.

6. Oh, and singing along to "La Dee DAAAH!" when applicable. :D

The guys looked like they were having a lot of fun on stage, enjoying themselves. I do hope they come back to Hawaii! They're definitely a band I'd catch a number of times. I went to the MGMT concert last month, and it was okay, but I don't think I'll do another one (we'll see). But BOH, it's a lock. Honestly, probably the best concert I've been to this year.

At least maybe next time, I'll actually act quick enough to get a picture with Ryan and Tyler if I ran into them again. Mental note to keep grabbing "Will Call" tickets, haha.

So, if you didn't get the jist, the concert was VERY GOOD. Roll on the Silversun Pickups. (I should be spam-listening to them in preparation, to get more accustomed than I am now---but it's hard to wean off the BOH).

Third Eye Blind, Pipeline Cafe, 06.27.2009

Well, Saw Third Eye Blind @ Pipeline on Saturday. PimpBot opened. PimpBot was sweet, really fun. I'll probably get something of theirs in the near future. I had some pictures of them but they're all really blurry and stuff. I was trying to sort out camera settings in that type of environment.

It was really stuffed and cramped getting up the front. I didn't quite get up close as I wanted. I didn't eat before I got there, so I got food. Next time I'm eating before I get there. I'll get a better spot next time for MGMT. Loads of sweaty people too, many wasted. But it was still cool. I went with my brother and other friends but ended going up closer and they stayed back. Easier to move by yourself, anyway. Just follow the moving people. Hee hee.

Anyway! Third Eye Blind. Really really awesome. They hold up well live. I think they really enjoyed that the place was packed. They played a lot of new stuff on the upcoming album (Ursa Major). Sounded really good. Maybe half the set was new stuff. He kept saying, "This is another new one..." which was fine. They played their known stuff inbetween, so that was cool.

She was really huggy, but that's sort of what you get when you want to press forward and are a bit friendly. :D

001. Gosh, first blog post in the new year.

Wellll...Not quite sure how I manage to keep up with this anymore, but uhm, welcome to the new year? I did start off with listening to Sigur Ros' Hoppipolla as the new year rang in with rain and fireworks--and the year started off well, even though leaning toward the end of 2008, I felt a bit low. Must have been the weather.

In the early hours of 2009, I underwent my annual "Clearing out of iTunes." Spring cleaning, as it were. And of course, I had to screen cap it all. I mean, I think it was pretty crazy--especially the last six months.

The total plays for Radiohead, Oasis, and Interpol. Radiohead, of course, coming through in a big way.

Keep in mind, the bulk of the Radiohead plays came within the last six months of 2008. When I tell you I had a MASSIVE addiction, I'm being quite serious.

Anyway, Top 25 of 2008--the top played track was at 700(Radiohead's Jigsaw Falling Into Place). My top played in 2007 was 228 (Interpol's C'mere)

So again, addiction. I think the low count in 2007 was attributed to the fact that I may have not had a computer at some stages. And 2008 saw me getting a Shuffle which aided a lot in keeping a high play count.

1. Radiohead (re-bought OK Computer just because, and re-bought Pablo Honey because I forgot to back it up on the external HD)

In any re-adding back into the computer...the first 3 (Radiohead being the recent, but Interpol and especially Oasis are required). Muse and The Smiths are what I suspect will be thrust into the top 10 or 5....I don't know. I can anticipate my listening habits. Radiohead sure came in a big way. I wouldn't have anticipated that they would have become my favorite band. I mean, I've mentioned that I've always admired them, but something changed---and it's a lot different now.

I have iTunes on Shuffle at the moment, and I haven't added anything since The Smiths...maybe Thom Yorke's "The Eraser." I'll hold off for now, though.

Okay. I haven't posted here in a while, have I?

Bad me, haha. Here's hoping for more regular posts. *crosses fingers*

Well, two classes done in the MBA program, but convinced I have botched at least some of the last project in the last class, but that’s what I get for procrastination, and a badly timed new addiction (Radiohead).

Oh yeah, Radiohead. I love them now. I mean, I’ve always liked them, with OK Computer and The Bends. Always had that admiration, but last Friday (while I was working on my last project), something clicked, and it was a little gradual, going from “All I Need” to “Bodysnatchers” with “Lucky” being the clincher.

I told my friend Kate a few days into this madness--that I think I have underestimated my initial admiration, as I called it. (I couldn’t think of a more appropriate word--I know there’s a better one to describe it). All I’ve listened to in the past week has been Radiohead. I’m serious. Maybe one or two odd listens to some Sigur Ros that used to be on the Shuffle. I say ‘used to’ because now, all that’s on the iPod shuffle is Radiohead.

The funny thing is, sometimes I don’t FEEL addicted. It’s like one part of me is slightly delayed (don’t ask me which part, I don’t even know which parts to begin with). Then I put on something like “Jigsaw Falling Into Place” and I fall again. I still don’t think I’m as nuts as some others, but then again, if confronted with the opportunity to see them live, or better yet, if I were to see them live now, I’d probably cry tears.

I don’t think I’m like super obsessed. I feel fairly intact, I think. Haha.

But as I mentioned to Kate, I’ve underestimated my initial “admiration.” I’m still not sure if it will increase. There’s so much more to delve into. But if what I’m experiencing now is anything similar to how my experience with getting into Interpol was, I’m pretty sure it will grow more intense. Hell, I’ve got a little crush on one of them, even. Do I always have to have a crush on someone in every band I get really addicted to(I throw Interpol and Oasis into this list)? I guess it adds to it, ha.

Anyway. Stuck listening to ‘Paranoid Android’ after watching a few live versions. Colin Greenwood, you and your bass suck. Ihateyou. (And in saying that I mean, “It’s f***ing incredible, thanks.”)

Well, I could blame Radiohead for my sub-par first week in my new class, but it really is an exercise in discipline. I have learned that I cannot CANNOT multitask when Radiohead is playing on my screen. I can have them playing if I’m reading, but that’s about it. I do need to work my butt off to make up for my uber failage this past week.

That means writing this ADR Clause and acing it. All I can say is God bless coffee from a French Press, and stuff. Oh and Radiohead.

I want to play bass.

The Most Annoying Song w/ a not-so-bad video

Ok, you so you've probably heard Mariah Carey's new song "Touch My Body." In all honesty, I hate it. Never have a heard such a "ho-ish" song in my life! It doesn't leave much to the imagination and it is so repetitive. Ugh.. why is it the number #1 song in the country? I have no idea, but whatever.

But, to my surprise, the video is not that bad. I watched it and thought the nerdy guy in it was totally awesome! He's one of those cute nerds that you want to date and have fawn over you. The video was entertaining. Mariah looked great (even though she pranced around in kinda skimpy clothes), but, hey, when Miley Cyrus is baring her back all over Vanity Fair magazine, what's can you consider decent anymore, right?

Overall, I thought the video was cute and entertaining. Although, I highly doubt Mariah knew about the connection speed specs she was telling the guy at the end of the video, it was believable enough. I liked it. Will watch the video again. The song itself, bleh, but whatever :)

Well, I sit here in the midst of an Interpol listening resurgence, and I realize that I haven't done that weekly updating thing. Jebus, I should get on that. I have however, been taking screenshots of my Top Artists on Last.fm for the past 3 weeks, and that's what you see above.

The first image is from 3 weeks ago. I was falling asleep listening to The Beatles on the iPod (also had a bit of a mini-resurgence there with them). Rufus Wainwright bolted straight into my top played, as I had just bought his album "Poses" then. I liked it at first listen, but haven't given it as much time as it should have. It's a good one so far though. Same goes for Mason Jennings' debut. "California"'s a tune.

A lot of listening over the past weeks have been more happy stuff, but I did start delving into some Tool 2 weeks ago, as seen in the second picture. That came from talking with my co-worker. We were mainly knocking Paul McCartney in the 70's post-Beatles. We're not big fans. I don't hate McCartney, I love they guy, but just didn't like that era. My co-worker mentioned that The Beatles couldn't play the complex stuff like Tool, and I countered with "If there were no Beatles, there would be no Tool...or anything else." That then turned into a "Could you imagine them doing Stinkfist?"

Admittedly, that was the only Tool song I was really into...I do like The Pot, but am unfamiliar with the others. I did know Tool came to Hawaii, and maybe they'll come again, so I started to download. I searched on Google for top Tool songs, and went a-downloadin' and listened a lot. I like it. Probably the heaviest I will go musically.

Flight of the Conchords -- fueled by the "Bowie" song of theirs, they have by consequence found themselves in my Top Played. The constants (a nod to that waaaaay awesome LOST episode 2 weeks ago) have been stellastarr* and FotC. They've both been in the top for the past 3 weeks. The Conchords were my actual top played this past week (3rd image). Is it fueled by my little mini-crush on Jemaine? Probably so. Damn him.

Anyway...I know they're on tour at the moment. I'd really love to see them live. The next live gig will be the Kokua Festival. It should be fun. I have to brush up on my Jack Johnson listening. I can't listen to too much of his at work...not really the place for that, haha. I have Mason Jennings' first album, as previously mentioned. eMusic has a bunch of his others, so I will help myself. I also need to listen to Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds' album as well. I like it. It should be fun.

One last bit...Stone Temple Pilots. I think I may buy an album. I like them a lot. That's going in the "Gonna buy sometime" list. I have it sitting somewhere in my head, haha.

Holy 90s flashback, Kokua Festival, I bought a lot of music again

I'm going to try a new thing on this blog. I have a last.fm and it usually scrobbles what I listen to on a daily basis. I think some plays have been missed, but whatev. At the beginning, I've put up a screenshot of the 'Most Played Artists' of that week.

This week, it's been a bit of a nostalgic week. That explains the Stone Temple Pilots, The Offspring, Weezer, Oasis, Weird Al and Green Day. I really started getting into music, my own music, when I hit high school. 1995-1996, Freshman year. MTV was playing more of the alternative stuff then(broad term, I know), and that's what I started to latch onto. Oasis, as I've said before, was my big love. And I watched a lot of MTV and VH-1 trying to catch "Wonderwall" or "Champagne Supernova," and by the way I would catch songs like Smashing Pumpkins' "Bullet with Butterfly Wings," STP's "Big Bang Baby," and "Burden in my Hand" by Soundgarden. The Weird Al listening was limited pretty much to 'Alternative Polka' and 'Amish Paradise.'

It was a good time for me, and I miss it a lot for the music.

But looking at the rest of my top played, there was a definite Beatles resurgence, spurned on by my constant 'Traveling Wilburys' listening. There's a lot of 'While my Guitar Gently Weeps' listening there. Sigur Ros, is always lovely. I've been playing them as I drifted off to sleep. I've finally received my DVD of Heima, so I'll be watching that soon.

Yeasayer are just an incredible indie band. Quality each time. The Raveonettes are a band I always have love for. I've been behind, so I didn't realize they released a new album. When I get the chance I will definitely get that.

eMusic, how I love that website. I've just got Elliott Smith's "Either/Or" and Stars' "Set Yourself on Fire" and Mason Jennings's self-titled debut. Mason is coming to the Kokua Festival this year (and I'm going, woot!), so I'm doing a bit of musical research. Kokua is featuring Mason, Paula Fuga, Go Jimmy Go, DAVE MATTHEWS and Tim Reynolds, and of course, Jack Johnson.

I also bought 'Live at Radio City' by Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds. Ooh, I get to see 'Gravedigger' live. Sweeeeet.

Oh, and iTunes, I spent waaay too much in there this week! I can't justify using Limewire, so I bought a lot of singles off there during the 90s nostalgic phase. I also bought 'Poses' by Rufus Wainwright. Really, really lovely.

I think I have like 18 more downloads on eMusic for the month, but I think I will save that for Mason Jennings. We'll see.

I'm very excited for 2008 musically. Two of my favorite bands, Oasis (the first love) and Stellastarr* are in the studio. Oasis are in the process of mixing their 7th studio album in Los Angeles. Well, that was last week, anyway. I think they might still be at it. Dave Sardy, who worked with them on 2005's "Don't Believe The Truth" is back on board, so I'm very excited about that.

This came up in my stellastarr* Google Alert. Oh man, I am psyched. I think it would be safe to say that stellastarr* is my 3rd favorite band, although they do scuffle with Oasis for that 2nd spot. Which---they probably do occupy, but I haven't accepted that Oasis are falling further down...

Anyway. According to the article, stellastarr* are working on 14 songs, one named "Zombie Prom." Interesting. Warchild (which I haven't heard yet) is on there as well.

Ah, I'm just psyehed.

In other news...Jack Johnson is headlining Coachella on Friday night. O RLY? That's....weird! It'd be fun to go to, but quite frankly, I guess I'm a little surprised.

After uploading Leopard (and I might redo...I went for update OS X, instead of archive and install...that seemed a better option. I'd have done Erase and Install, but I didn't want to lose all my 3rd party apps)....I've started putting the music back, slowly.

That was the initial order, I believe. I put some Radiohead in there, as well as Band of Horses, a band that I strongly recommend. I think I only have a gig and a half of stuff in there. I think this way I'll LISTEN to the music I have that I don't really listen to.

I'm also going to try to listen to the music "organically" not minding what gets played more than the other. In the past, "C'mere" by Interpol has been my most played. It might not be anymore, but I'm not going to purposely put it before others. Although, ironically, it was experiencing a bit of a resurgence. Right now Radiohead's Exit Music (for a film) is the top played, followed by The Strokes' "Reptilia," which is a HELL of a tune.

Have had a bit of a guilty pleasure moment. Good Charlotte. I went to iTunes and downloaded "Young and the Hopeless," and the songs "Little Things" and "Motivation Proclamation." I know I'm of the musical philosophy of "If I like it, I like it, so screw your opinion.." but sometimes I get slightly embarrassed, haha. Fall Out Boy, Good Charlotte...yeah.

Michael Buble and relaxation

Before I left for my trip to California, I purchased two Michael Buble CDs from Borders. (Yes, I actually purchased CDs! Shocking). Anyway, the first I bought was his first album, self-titled michael buble, which I think is his best. Has some of the great classics including Fever, Moondance, and Come Fly with Me, from his famous Starbucks commercial (see two posts below). In this one, he reminds of a young Harry Connick Jr. Very smooth with his voice, but has some emotions inflected in parts of his songs which makes him different. Frank, Dean, Tony, and the rest of the original gang seemed like their songs were meant to be sung to a crowd. Michael Buble sounds more like he's singing to you, which I like.

The second album I bought, It's Time, has a more mature feel to it, compared to his first. Hard to explain it. But I love the songs Quando, Quando, Quando, Save the Last Dance for Me, and You Don't Know Me.

Anyway, I'd recommend Michael Buble for any trip. My plane had a lot of turbulence when flying back to Hawaii. So, I put on some Michael Buble from my iPod and wah-lah, instant relaxation. Love you, Michael Buble!!!!

Anyway...I discovered this website -- "Take Away Shows" -- on this Interpol forum I post on regularly (Interpol Online) , and it's remarkable. Such a kick ass concept.

I had heard about Final Fantasy (Owen Pallett, who has worked with the Arcade Fire/the name draws from the actually FF game, of which Pallett is a fan), but never knew then who he was (until I realized he was in AF)...I clicked on Final Fantasy perf on Take Away Shows's website and it's just lovely. I downloaded the song "Your Light is Spent," and I adore it.

Search about: there's also a real good Shins and Arcade Fire one on there. Lots of good music all around, and seemingly, a lot of people/bands I should listen to are on here. It seems like an incredible way to discover more new music. *squee*

I've done it. I've seen Interpol live.

And I am pretty dang well satisfied.

It's been a good almost 2 1/2 weeks since. I understand how many feel after seeing a band they love. There's a definite withdrawal. I made a playlist based off the setlist in Chicago. I completely spaced out to them at an airport. I missed a flight, because of it. Not proud of that moment, trust me. :P

There's a little ache in my heart. I'm listening to 'Lighthouse' at the moment. It hurts. But it's a good hurt.

Liars were interesting. Never heard them before. It was like this big wall of sound. I was intrigued and entertained, especially by the lead singer. Drumming was wicked. Almost tribal-ish.

When Interpol went on, wow. I had been looking forward to that point for ages, and could hardly believe I was there. I was up front left, one person off the rail. Daniel Kessler was right in front of me. When they came out, I was just like, eyes wide open, hands covering my mouth.

They were RIGHT there. I wasn't dreaming, I wasn't imagining it. They have this little orchestration bit at the beginning...and Dan would be already swaying to the music, getting in the zone...just lovely to see that up close. :D When they started Pioneer, my facial expression (eyes wide open, hands over my mouth) stayed like that for a little while.

It was so easy to get lost in the music, to dance. For always and ever, I'll never let go... Indeed. :)

Pioneer to the Falls...I fell in love with that song again, especially the climax. It makes me tear up a little. Mammoth didn't take me as much, which surprised me. I was VERY excited to hear C'mere, as it's my fave. Was excited to hear No I in Threesome. I love that music vid, and seeing it played live increased my love for that song. It's strangely endearing. Not Even Jail is amazing live! It was a bit emotional, singing along. The lyrics are more striking especially after seeing it live...Amazing.

People really popped for Untitled. I must've squeed a bit too loud. I got a weird look.

Undoubtedly, one awesome gig. It went by way too fast, but didn't seem to have a bad bit to it! It seemed like a great crowd. Good energy.

I met some awesome people that night, got an autograph from Carlos. I think he still has my pen, and I find that funny.

It was worth it to travel so far to see them. I'd do it again, no doubt.

Well, today I am off on another adventure. Destination: Chicago.

I will be catching Wicked: The Musical this coming Sunday, which, coincidentally is when I arrive. Woo!

Thursday I get to catch these lovely folks in concert.

Am I excited? You bet your arse.

Yeah, I know I haven't posted here in awhile too. Sorry about that. One song that has peaked my interest is James Blunt's 1973. The beat is very retro, but I like the feel of it. It has that vibe that makes me start having flashbacks of my own. I wonder if this is how my parents feel right now. After all, they were married in 1978. I wonder if they ever have flashbacks being "in a club, in 1973."

Sigh, when I'm in my 60s, I bet there will also be a singer half my age singing about the "good ol' days" of us hanging around a Starbucks in 2003...

Pretty happy at the moment. Just got my copy of Interpol's new album "Our Love To Admire" off of iTunes (I gave into the preorder because they offered a Ticketmaster password to get the first jump on Interpol tickets).

I'm about to to listen to it. It is now 2:30am (I just got off of work). I'll try to review each track as it comes along. Also, the iTunes store offers an extra track called, "Mind over Time." I hear good things about it.

Alright. The headphones are on. Let's get started, shall we?

o1. Pioneer to the Falls

I've heard this on that Kitchener bootleg.. Amazing opener. It's hypnotic. I feel as if I'm in a bit of a trance. The broader sound that was promised is really brought to full force here. When Paul Banks sings, "..and here comes the fall." The song carries you to another level. I'm getting images like when I listened to The Cure's "Pornography." Not depressing, but the music is so vibrant that it paints pictures.

o2. No I In Threesome

Paul's voice shows a more emotion, I notice. Not just monotone-ish shouting. His voice really rises and falls with the music, quite spectacular. "Maybe it's time we give something new a try."

o3. The Scale

Dang, I love that Daniel Kessler and his guitar riffs. And whoa...Paul did a high note? (I must sound the idiot) He's vocally more melodic.

o4. The Heinrich Maneuver

I've listened to this one a lot, but we'll give it time. :D Although, after seeing the music video for this one, I keep playing that image in my mind. I love the little guitar bit around (1:06). Paul sings "And today, my heart swings," and there's this little guitar bit that's deep and goes "vroom." Love it. I have to admit, when I heard the Kitchener tracks, it wasn't my favorite. Mammoth was. I love Heinrich a lot more now.

o5. Mammoth

Holy crap, I'm so excited for this one, it's been the one that I've looked forward to the most. It just...takes off. Like, just grabs you by the collar and takes you for the ride. Really rocking on this one! Paul's beginning vocals are lower than the bootleg version at the beginning...but it's still freaking massive. Bells and all, it's amazing. If I ever get to an Interpol show, this is the one I'll be anticipating the most.

o6. Pace Is The Trick

Ooh, halfway.

I'm trying to make sense of the words. I usually listen to music and how it makes me feel. This track seems pretty emotional and raw. Not at all distant. I really like this one, will grow on me, definitely.

o7. All Fired Up

I heard off a few Interpol interviews that Carlos' bass playing is less in the forefront and that Sam's drums are much louder. No kidding. It's like guitar, loud drums, keyboards. I hardly detect bass. This is a definitely Interpol, but new direction. Quality.

o8. Rest My Chemistry

Heard this, since it had leaked. A definite favorite. Starts with that little kind of piano box opening. Similar to the interval In the Rilo Kiley track "Spectacular Views." Same whimiscal mood. Then 20-or so seconds in, the bands kick in, and it's lovely, delicious groove into a Pixies-ish guitar lick. Lyrics relate the aftermath of too much partying...but I'm too busy moving with the groove to listen intently....

o9. Who Do You Think

I usually try to guess what the song might sound like by the beginning riff. I thought it a bit Jeff Buckley...then the song starts, sounds like U2 for a second when Paul starts singing, then it pauses, like it's switching gears and goes forward. A little pause here and there. Clever. This is growing on me for sure.

1o. Wrecking Ball

Sounds like it's heading toward the mood presented at the beginning. Really sounds sort of sad and full of regret, in a way. To me it does. The strings, bass drums, horns at the 3:30 mark make me think of some rain, and some Victorian image of a man walking away from a woman. Lyrics may suggest otherwise. I could be way off. :D

11. The Lighthouse

Last (album) track. What, already? Man.

Beginning sounds like a Spanish guitar strum bit. Like the sun is rising, or something like that. Paul's voice floats over as the guitar crests and falls. It's surreal. This is different...holy. (2:09) It's slowly building. I was going to say that the guitar riff is different for Interpol. Or, of what I expect anyway. A bit dreamlike, especially with the keyboards adding some orchestral background feel to it. Drums and everything else enters around (4:25), bringing closure to this track and to the album.

Amazing.

Mind Over Time (Bonus Track)

Okay. The extra track. I'm assuming it's going to be an instrumental...

(1:15) Oh nevermind, my bad. Haha. They're using some sound bytes...I thought some of it was in French. After those bytes, the band jumps in full force....before Paul brings back down...

FINAL THOUGHTS

I don't think I ever have to worry about a lack of quality when it comes to Interpol. I'm never really disappointed. OLTA is closer to TOTBL in terms of mood in some places, but Antics shows itself as well. OLTA shows the evolution of Interpol's sound, into something bigger and broader. OLTA is it's own little animal (pardon the pun, considering the album art).

I have to give the album time to see how it grows on me, but it's got a good start. I recommend it. It's solid through and through and entirely cohesive from beginning to end. Maybe I'm biased, but it's the best I've heard this year. Arcade Fire probably second.

When you, dear reader, do get this album. Headphones are recommended. You want to get lost in this. :)

I'm pretty excited. I've just preordered the upcoming Interpol album, "Our Love To Admire." I've heard some of the tracks on it. I mentioned the three from the Kitchener show (Pioneer to the Falls, Mammoth, and The Heinrich Maneuver). Some other songs have shown up on MySpace where it has since been ripped and made available (Scale, All Fired Up, and Rest My Chemistry)

I've heard them, and it sounds great. Rest My Chemistry shows how the sound a bit different, it marks a bit of change. Paul Banks' voice is no longer as monotone-ish, and has more color now. Emotion shows more. I like the change, because I'm not expecting another, better Turn On The Bright Lights. Our Love To Admire shares some of TOTBL's traits, but takes it towards a different direction.

I've heard the whole album has leaked. I'll refrain from getting it. I doubt anybody near me is as big an Interpol fan as I am, so I don't expect to hear it blasting out of windows or forced upon me. :D

I'm just going to entertain myself with other stuff. Listened through Matisyahu's 'Live At Stubb's' album. I've not listened through it, funnily enough. I mean, I don't remember really sitting down and listening to it. I just played "King Without A Crown" and that was that. The album itself is solid. There's this track "Fire and Heights" where it's just his band doing a bit of a jam/instumental (i know, same thing), and it sounds awesome. It put me into enough of a reggae/dub mood (whatever that is), so I started playing my "Radiodread" album. That's by Easy Star All Stars. They took Radiohead's OK Computer and made it dub. It's pretty good. I was sitting at work typing and I think I understand why people like dub so much. For me it's more of an aesthetic sort of thing. I can't put a finger on why I like it at the moment.

I also have Art Brut to entertain me. Finally got to listening to them, and I crack up everytime. Awesome, witty, funny, catchy. Not to mention, I love their album cover. They have a new one coming up too. Snap. Going to have to grab that.

The Cure - "Pornography"

Yes, for the uninitiated, the title of the album is dodgy. I assure you, however, that the album is not.

In fact, it is terrifying.

When I listen to music, I never give much thought to the words, especially when at work. I put the album on and type away. Listening to "Pornography" was no exception. It reeled me in. It scared me because it made what you fear, real. The album begins with "One Hundred Years," and as soon as the guitar begins to wail you KNOW what you are in for.

This is not happy "Friday, I'm In Love" Cure. This is fear. This is complete, unwavering, destructive despair.

It's a dark hole. It's a situation you cannot and will never get out of. It's terrifying and scary. I'm a Christian, and I yet this made me feel like I was going to Hell. Not because it's demonic or anything. The music paints a picture of a horrible situation that is impossible to escape. It's the soundtrack to your nightmare.

Although the mood is pretty much constant, the intensity pulls back a little the further the album goes, for me, at "A Strange Day." It's one brief reprieve, a feeling of hope, before falling into "Cold," or what I liken to the feeling that something isn't quite right.

The title track "Pornography" verifies that. Just when you think you're out of whatever danger or sense of despair, you are dragged right back into it.

This is an album that I would recommend to listen to in its entirety. It does have its standout tracks, but "Pornography" is much more striking from beginning to end. Any music fan interested in hearing an evolution of a band should get this. It's goth, it's thematic, it's great. It captures human emotion at its darkest and is a testament to Robert Smith and The Cure's ability to toggle between happy and sweet ("Friday, I'm In Love") to this and back.

Oh, hello. I've been kicking myself with getting back to writing on this here blog. Since getting the new iPod, I've been getting new music and re-discovering other music. Been in a bit of a happy phase, sparked by the re-discovery of Belle & Sebastian's "Another Sunny Day." It came on while I had my iPod (name: Fawkes) on shuffle mode. Then I played it over and over.

It reminded me of another track that sounded similarly cheery, "Caught In The Rain" by Preston School of Industry. Then I thought of They Might Be Giants' "Birdhouse In Your Soul."

THEN I went on about The Cure. (happy Cure, not eerily depressed and in despair Cure...I have a post lined up about that. I was going to throw that in here, but it would severely mess the mood up on this theme)

Anyway, here is the happy On-The-Go p'list I fashioned up from those last few hours at work.

As mentioned on my LiveJournal (here) I want to go because INTERPOL is playing. as well as the Arcade Fire and number of other bands and artists I like. I mean, it's all well and good that Rage Against the Machine are re-forming and the Red Hot Chili Peppers are playing. But screw that. I want my Interpol.

When I first heard that Interpol were playing, I checked the prices out of curiousity. Seriously. The cost of going is out of my price range....until I heard STAR were sending people. My friend/co-worker Christina is going to go with me if either one of us succeeds in winning.

It makes me very happy. I should really try to listen in though, goshdangit.

Was doing some legal (and illegal, shhhh) downloading + was thrilled to see a new Arcade Fire song up. It's called "Intervention," and I like it very much. The new ones out in March or April. 2007 is looking to be a good music year.

I'm addicted to a handful of songs at the moment...

1. "Anna-Molly" = Incubus (LOVE it.)

2. "This Ain't A Scene, It's An Arms Race" = Fall Out Boy (I know, Fall Out Boy. Not sure if it's a guilty pleasure. I think I genuinely do like them....even though that bass player of theirs is a butthead. Oh, and let's not mention the widdle tweenees obsessed with said band and said bass player.)

3. "Here In Your Arms" = hellogoodbye (it's cute and it grew on me.)

4. "When You Were Young" = The Killers (massive single, but "Bones" doesn't hold to the singles from the first album...and yes, I'm yet to get "Sam's Town.")

Not like I'm trying to impress anyone with my musical tastes, which in this case to some people, has just gone down the proverbial tube. But who freaking cares. I balance out. :) Is music taste supposed to impress? I know I've held back from admitting to liking certain bands because of label issues (as in description of band, not record label). I mean. Hell. I can like Arcade Fire and Fall Out Boy. And Interpol. Strange bedfellows as it is. So, I throw music listening expectations out the window.

Yeah.

Oh, and RIP James Brown. It was a genuine shock to hear of your passing. Your music defined a generation. Rest In Peace. You will be missed.

BONOLULU!!!!!!!!

Man, I can't believe it. It's been a week since U2 played Hawaii, or as I have come to call it with influence from some friends---BONOLULU!

I told myself that I needed to post about it here. I had hoped to come back here and to my VLOG in a triumphant shout with videos and many pictures. Sadly, I was not able to secure a lot of pictures due to my camera puttering out as well as my cameraphone. I WAS able to get some pictures and I will post those here....

But what I lack in pictures, I have memories in abundance....sort of. I need to write them down, anyway.

I got off of work at 3(!) in the morning. I had heard over the radio that Aloha Stadium was closing the early parking at midnight and would re-open at 4am. My boss told me I should check if it's AM or PM, but I was fairly sure it was AM. It was off to the gas station and WalMart and on to the Stadium I go!

That's my Jeep. I covered it, haha. Got to the Stadium at about 4:15-ish in the AM, and got in the line. We were all separated in pens. I made it in the 2nd one.

The first pic was the line when I sat down. I talked to this guy David who lined up after me. I ate a little bit, tried to read, took a few pictures (like that second one) and eventually fell asleep for an hour or so.

Looked like this when I woke up looking at this line...

So, I ended up lounging in my chair listening to stellastarr* and reading Blender and realizing that I probably brought too much. I met up with my friend Kath and got my ticket. YAY. :) Then I fell asleep again. Woke up at around 11:30am and remembering that security said we had to clear our stuff by noon...I got up, hiked all the way back to my Jeep and chucked my stuff in there.

Our pen had some sort of pack mentality going on. As soon as one dude lined up, the whole line moved.

Eventually some smart people rebelled and stayed in the shade. I joined too, and sat down and fell asleep while sitting. Hey, I was running on 2-3 hours of sleep! That third picture was the 3rd pen, behind us. Notice they're not really lining up. Neither were the 1st pen, I later found out.

Finally, around 4pm, we were finally starting to queue up to finally GET IN the Stadium.

It was kind of queuing up for a rollercoaster ride, all windy and stuff. I met two sisters from New York. Or Jersey. I can't remember. I do know one works in NYC. I ended up hanging with them, which was cool. They were great. :)

Just something that caught my eye. I'm weird like that, I know.

Awesome show. They encored with Pearl Jam (who were awesome, and did a great cover of the late Bruddah Iz's "Hawaii '78" seen HERE It's amazing. Watch it.)

Billy Joe from Green Day performed "The Saints are Coming" with U2. That was mega, and so was hearing "Window In The Skies."

The show was unbelievable, and well worth the 12+ hours of waiting, dead cameras and sore feet. :)

I would definitely travel to see U2 again, but I hope to God they come to Hawaii again!

Haha, except I don't have a my own desk

Data entry provides me with the opportunity to listen to cds that I haven't to listened to in their entirety. Right now the Ipod's headphone jack is slightly messed up, as I can only hear out the right side. So, back to cds I go.

-The Matador at 15 collection is nice with Cornelius' "Drop." Highly addictive and almost gets me to start dancing in my chair. For that cause I can't play it much, b/c it also causes me to type slower...and compared to most of the others I'm slow. Yo La Tengo's "Don't Have To Be So Sad" is lovely too...the whole first cd for the most part is lovely. Second cd I put in and it starts off with The New Pornographers' "Graceland."

Considering that work took longer than expected last night b/c of the system being down, I expected to be in a slightly off mood. Listening to Graceland over and over remedied that. I was going to put it in my Myspace profile, but the person didn't upload it right, so no Graceland.

But I did put on stellastarr*'s "Love and Longing." Listened to their "Harmonies for the Haunted" cd like 3 times last night. Was going to put in Damien Rice, but never got to it. I think that's when I decided to listen to the Matador comp and Graceland came on.

The Muse album 'Black Holes and Revelations' is rich. Love that. I thought, at first listen, it didn't sound like it had that urgency like Absolution(I seem to remember that it had more head down piano bits, so I guess I thought it wasn't as charging), but on second listen, it's still there. Absolution is on my iPod, but I can't find the cd. Dang.

Oh and Antics. Been listening to Interpol's Antics too. Don't know where my TOTBL cd is. Do I even have a TOTBL? It's on my iPod...but I could've sworn....hmmm.

Oh well, another fun night of listening will be had.

"What? I've kinda this blog for a year? Whoo freaking hoo!

I haven't been listening to music as heavily as I used to, since Rudy (my iBook) has puttered out. I have not money to fix him, and I can't exactly charge the Wedge (the iPod mini) to him to charge, as the brother has taken it to college. I have been using the older bro's PC during the day, and AIM has this radio feature on it. Rad.

I've been curious about Dub Reggae since Dan Kessler (of Interpol) goes on about it. So, AOL radio has a station dedicated to Dub. Heard an interesting Dub version of Karma Police. Odd, but not half bad. I like Dub. Puts me in a nice mood, but I don't think I'm going to run out and buy Dub records left and right. I might find that Radiohead one. I think they called themselves Radiodread. In either case, I'm interested in how they do Exit Music (for a film).

AOL Radio has been a decent substitute ( I have even heard Interpol played on the "Top Indie" Station), and much better than radio. I listen to STAR 101.9 + It's okay, but I remember why I stopped. Commercials, and some of the music choices. I like some emo, but man. I listen to Classic Rock on KPOI. That's nice. I stay away from the Hawaiian. I don't know why. I don't favor it as much. I should, seeing as the only thing I could play around the house is the ukulele as Jose took the guitar, only to find out that majority of the guys in the dorm have guitars as well. Dang.

MySpace has been a good thing as well. Finally heard Interpol's "Song Seven" with the Daniel "rap/spoken word segment/whatever you call it" bit. I had it on my profile before switching to Digital Underground's "The Humpty Dance" and I haven't been able to find it to put it back on since. I did find a performance of Song Seven on YouTube. I was not disappointed. Mr. Kessler is one fine lookin' man.

MySpace is also to blame for my recent addiction to Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy." My friend had it on their profile. I had heard the song before, but when I then looked on YouTube and saw their perf at the MTV Movie Awards dressed like Star Wars, I was won over. Genius. I will get their album when I get to it. That and The Notwist.

heard of these guys before by name only, i think, it was from a Daniel Kessler (interpol) interview. saw their video of "one with the freaks" on youtube, but to me, "consequence" was the selling point. i'm at a lack of funds due to a lack of a job, but I saw Towers had a Notwist album. I aim to get it sometime.

2. Last Goodbye - Jeff Buckley (Download here)

i still don't think I've grasped the concept of how good Buckley was, and why people go on about him. I'm listening through his album "Grace" again. 'Last Goodbye' is great as well as "Lover, You Should Have come over. Actually, the whole album is good. I'm sure after a few more listens, I'm probably going to be hooked to it.

3. There Is A Light That Never Goes Out - The Smiths (Download here)

I haven't listened to enough of The Smiths. I'm going to now. I did get Morrissey's 'Live at Earl's Court" cd. Anyway, this song...it's incredibly romantic. About dedication and faithfulness to ze death. How could you not love a lyric that goes, 'To die by your side. . . the privilege is mine.' I also love "Bigmouth Strikes Again," which is quite the opposite, lyric-wise from 'There Is A Light..." but for download sake, I only put up this song. Bigger plus, I can pretty much play it on a guitar. Just need to memorize the chords.

Mary J. does rock!

Just listened to the Mary J. Blige/U2 collaboration called One. I think it's quite a good song. It breaks Mary J out of her R&B roots and allows her to expand her talent. I always been a fan of Mary J., but seeing her try something different is something I'm proud to see her do. I wish more artists would experiment with different styles of music. Nelly Furtado has pulled this off nicely with her Timberland collaboration with "Promiscuous."

Of course, some of these lines should NOT be crossed. Remember Garth Brooks' venture into emo rock and Vanilla Ice as a rapper? Crossovers are not always a good thing, but when they work, it is very sweet music indeed.

"Life goes easy on me/Most of the time"

- "The Blower's Daughter" - Damien Rice, O.

I have been listening to a lot of Damien Rice lately. Namely, his "O" album. It's folk, and it's good. His songwriting is top notch, and it's beauty.

I first heard "Delicate" while using Pandora, which is a pretty awesome website, I might add. (Explained *here*). It was nice and mellow, but deep.

I told myself to download it, but I didn't get around to it. I did, however, find that my not-so-little brother had Damien's cd. I imported it onto my iBook. Finally, one day I decided to listen to it. I was instantly drawn to "Cannonball." Stones taught me to fly, Love taught me to lie, Life taught me to die......it's just so beautiful. HIs voice just draws the emotion out. I told my good friend Becky, the super vlogger, that "Cannonball," (pretty much the whole album) makes me wish I had a boyfriend I had broken up with so I could bawl to this album.

Move over Dashboard and your emo anguish. Hello Damien and your folky feelings.

But then, I am single, and therefore, have no one to break up with. Har har.

Anyway. This is an album I strongly recommend. Taken or not, it's quality.

Get These: The Blower's Daughter, Cannonball, Amie, Cheers Darlin', I Remember....oh, bugger. just buy the album

Okay, had no internet this weekend, so that's why I'm updating now! Go me!

Anyway, hope you all had a nice weekend. My grandma and aunty came back from the Philippines on Saturday, so that was nice, just in time for mother's day. My mom is on the mainland at the moment. So's my dad and cousin. Lucky geezer. She's like, 10, and gets to miss 3 weeks of school. I want to miss 3 weeks of work! Gahhh.

Saw this at Circuit City. I'm always prone to buying cds. I didn't listen to the whole thing, but I do like what I've heard so far. Bought the cd and played in my friend Crystal's RAV4. Interpol's Obstacle 1 came on as the 2nd track and I was like, HECK YEAAAH! The New Pornographers' The Laws Have Changed is now a current favorite. Considering that I am uninitiated (except for Interpol) to the Matador line of bands, this is a good start.

It's nice and happy from the first few songs I've heard.

2. The Smiths "The Queen Is Dead"

One of my trainers turned me on the song "Bigmouth Strikes Again." Great song. She said to get their first record. I couldn't figure out which one that was, but I hear this album I bought is recommended.

I did get a comedy cd by Rap Reiplinger as well. I haven't listened to either cd yet. I'll probably spin them both at work if I remember. Not that I'd hear them, so I'll probably drag a cd player with me, b/c I haven't uploaded them into my iPod yet. Anyways....

"Yeah! I went!"

To tell you the truth, I know only a few Jack Johnson songs. My younger brother, Jose, is a HUUUUUUGE JJ fan, so in between me blasting Oasis and Interpol and whatever else may have caught my fancy....he plays Jack Johnson, Ben Harper, and whatever else has got his fancy. It's cool that way. I listen to what he's listening to, and vice versa.

So, when Jack Johnson announced the Kokua Festival, Jose was rightfully stoked, and he began to make arrangements to get tickets. With people like Willie Nelson, Ben Harper...yeah, those tickets were going to fly. I asked if I could tag along. He also bought a few extra b/c he was going to ebay them. Pretty cool.

So, it's me, Jose, my friend Becky headed out to Waikiki Shell one mildly drizzling afternoon. Parking was heinous, but it was alright! We got to the Shell, and we heard ALO playing. NUTS! We entered just as Zach Gill and his gang was singing "Barbeque." It's happy sounding, but the lyrics are pretty deep. Jose made me replay it to hear them...

So, it sucked that we couldn't see ALO live. NEXT YEAR. C'mon!

The next act was Paula Fuga and the One Love 'Ohana Band. They had a bit of a hiccup with her mic at the beginning, but I loved her. She had great prescence and a lovely soulful voice. I thought she was great. It was kinda cool too, though. Afterwards, she was sitting in my section. Oh...which I forgot to mention!....Jose got seats that were 5th row!!!! That made it awesome...

Anyway Paula was right on. I think after her was, Henry Kapono, but in between the breaks me and Becky had gone to get food. Jose wanted a pretzel and a drink, and I wanted a margarita(which are too expensive, let me say). Becky got a chili dog and was like, eating it while I was in line for a margarita. Looong line, but I was listening to Kapono's set. He pulled a Hendrix at the beginning playing the Hawaiian National Anthem like Hendrix played the American National Anthem at Woodstock. It was meaaaaan. Finally got my margarita(which was like, liquid!!!!), but only caught the last song of Kapono's set, which was very very rock n roll-ish. Not what I expected, but it was cool.

By this point, another friend Sharilyn arrived before Ben Harper's set. Man, I can honestly say, I don't know a lot of Harper's stuff. I can say now that I'm going to jump on it! He did an acoustic set with a member of his band, The Innocent Criminals. I know the guy was new to the band, but I don't remember his name. He was great on the guitar, and bald. It was good music. Nice and groovy.

Just an aside note, when Becky and I were walking in, we noticed a LOT of haoles aka, white people/tourists. Not that I have anything against white people. It just seemed odd to me. It was like midaged folks too...Totally rad, man. Willie Nelson & the Planetary Bandits took the stage next and they were incredible. Very solid. The haoles were all dancing and stuff. They were all in the front. In my section there was this cowgirl chick dancing in front trying to get Willie's attention and sign her book. It was hilarious. We (me, Jose, Shari, Becky, and the ladies behind us) got a kick out of it. Needless to say, she became a source of amusement.

Anyway. Admittedly, I only know, like, 3 Willie Nelson songs. He sang "Beer for my Horses," "On The Road Again," and "Always on my Mind," and the rest I didn't know. The saxophonist, I thought, was incredible. The had this young guitarist dressed with a bandana around his head, and dressed in a white suit who was incredible on the guitar. He sang/played this song called "Floodin' In Texas" or something like that. Very enjoyable and impressive. I got pretty excited when Willie sang "Always on my mind." It was great...

THEN....Jack Johnson!!!

This was great. Jose was soooo excited. I was too, I had another margarita...frozen! Woo! I was feeling good. It was admittedly stronger than the other one. Which made it better, haha.

Anyway, it was incredibly cool. While they were setting up for Jack's stage, I was like, excited. Zach's on my side of the stage!!!!!! So, haha. It was an awesome set, even though it was raining! Best bit was when they performed "Banana Pancakes" which includes the lyric, "Can't you see that it's been raining.."when it was. A totally cool moment. There was a good vibe going through the crowd. Jack played a lot of his hits, "Sitting, Waiting, Wishing," "Banana Pancakes," "Taylor," "Breakdown," and "Flake!"

He did Flake with Ben Harper. Incredible. Jack brought on Paula Fuga, and I forget what song they did. THEN he brought on Damien Marley who is performing at the Shell today (4/23/2006). They did "Welcome to Jamrock." Man, that was sooo cool. Paula sounded great. Jack also brought on Kawika, who was Emcee'ing the event, and Kapono. Then, Jack and Ben had a little bit of an acoustic set, before bringing Willie Nelson on for a song to close the evening.

Overall it was a sweet experience. Just disappointed that I missed ALO! Plus, after sitting that close up front, I highly doubt I'll take a seat in the back, especially if it will be for an artist that I really want to see. Then again, if I am broke, I'd opt to barbeque outside.

Good stuff. Hopefully, I will be back next year!

Life, for me anyway, has been a little busy. I guess I'm just getting used to this "go to work everyday" idea. haha. I realize that I haven't updated ye olde music bloge in a looooong time.

I have bought a few more cds recently. I'll try to list them all as I go along:

1. Muse-Absolution
~ it's like apocalyptic, end of the world, very urgent kind of rock. love it.

2. Morningwood.
~This one is growing on me. Garage rocky, borderline glammish.

3. Death Cab's "Plans" and Jeff Buckley's "Grace" for my brother. haven't listened to them yet. I had bought them for his birthday, and yes, there was a bit of a incentive in there for me as well. *wink wink*

4. The Hives' Tussles In Brussels (DVD)
~ haven't watched every single bit of it yet...did watch majority of the concert...man, they kick butt!

5. Arctic Monkeys's debut
~ I like it, but I don't see why the fuss! Really catchy and good, though.

6. Casting Crowns, "Lifesong"
~ I'm starting to buy a little more CCM, but I'm UBER picky when it comes to it. I can't stand mediocre, trite stuff. I'm not looking for something to worship to. Not rock out to. I've just listened through it, and it's very good.

Juvy goes to Towers, part 2!

Today, I talked to my brother (more like texted) and asked if he wanted anything from the Apple Store at Ala Moana. I had misplaced his iTrip, and said I'd get him another one. So, after work, I decided that I'd go an get his iTrip auto, which is like a iPod charger/fm transmitter/supercool.

Anyway, you're probably wondering. What has this got with you going to Towers? Dear reader, I'm getting to that. On my way to the bus stop, I walk by Towers every day. My first ever visit Keeaumoku's Towers resulted in a happy splurge. What was good about that was, I got 4 new cds. On the minus side, I've listened to them only a handful of times. (except action action--maybe once. whoop.). SWR is sinister, The Zutons are happy, and stellastarr* may be somewhere inbetween. Anywho, they're all in the queue to get reviewed.

SWR(She Wants Revenge for the un-acronymed) had me watching their performance on Morning Becomes Eclectic, and The Editors were mentioned. So, I began downloading, and I like them.

The cd I intended to get

So, I go to Towers, and I was like, "It's got to be there, I've seen it." So, I get there, and it's not! It said "March 21." Maybe I should've read it more in depth, but I figured that I could wait a week to get the album.

So, I was at a dilemna. Do I just LEAVE without a cd, or buy one anyway?

Heck. Buy one? Buy two!

The two cds I ended up getting

1. My Morning Jacket, "It Still Moves."

2. Muse, "Absolution."

Yeah. I can't help myself sometimes. Downside, I don't have my cd player, so I have to upload and transfer to Wedge(my iPod mini). Man. A week till I get that Editors cd! Woo!

Juvy's first visit to Towers.

Actually, not my FIRST visit to A Tower Records. Last Friday was my first visit to Tower Records on Keaaumoku since I started at HMSA. It's like, right down the road. I've been good about not going since I have to catch TheBus home. So since my older brother had to go to Ala Moana, I went to Towers, yay!

I bought me a few cds:

The first one, She Wants Revenge, is the one I wanted to get initially. I hear all these Interpol comparions. I think, it's a crap comparison, really. It all stems from the fact that they draw from almost the same influences, namely Joy Division. Besides, SWR is much darker than Interpol is. Maybe even a little more sinister. I mean, c'mon the lyric "I want to f***** tear you apart" is a dark enough lyric as it is. From first listening to them (before getting the record), I was reminded more of Depeche Mode.

The second one, Action Action, I got on a whim. I listened to it in the store, and I liked it, so I bought it. I don't know crap about the band, and I need to listen to it more. The first track shows promise. It's atmospheric and spacey.

The third album, Stellastarr*'s "Harmonies for the Haunted", I like. haven't had it on uber repeat, but it's a good record. If you're curious, Sweet Troubled Soul is a great tune. Check that out. I know the first album is good as well, but I'm going to listen to this one more before I get it.

The fourth, "Who Killed....." - The Zutons is nice and catchy. You can't resist tapping your foot to it. I've liked them for a while, but never got around to buying their record. So, I finally got it. Very much grounded in 60s kinda retro rock.

Anyway, that's my buy at Towers! We can all hope that I get around to putting in reviews. I've got loads of cds that need listening to to get reviews. I'm trying to curb my Interpol habit, lol. Had a brief remission today, but hell, that's not bad. Give me PDA and C'mere anyday. Throw "The New" and "Say Hello to the Angels" on top of that, and I'm done.

A new mix!

My friend Carly's birthday is on Friday, and I finally got her box mailed out the other day. I promised her a mix cd, and just remembered to make one. It's mainly Death Cab and stuff along those lines. I picked the "catchy stuff," like Soul Meets Body. There is the occaisional weird song. I've just heard a song that has just made my heart just...I don't know how to describe....maybe has a VERY STRONG grip, a definite tug, on my heart. I don't know how to describe it. I'm listening to "Hide and Seek" by Imogen Heap at the moment. I've heard of Imogen, but it was a name thing, and never went to look into her. So, here I am on myspace, clicking on random Bob Jones U profiles and I come across a certain page, where ironically enough, sparked off my Death Cab listening spree. She had been playing that Imogen song...and can i just say....wow.

It's so simple. It's just her voice, with effects, yeah. No accomanyment, really. There is no need...it's so captivating. It's ouch and wow at the same time.

I don't know. It's incredible. I just know that I haven't been floored like that in a while.

I'm still sitting here with my jaw dropped.

EDIT!!: Eh, got it tonight. Went to Borders with Jon, ze older bro, and Linda. I only had 10 bucks. Jon said he'd spot me, and i HAD to get it. Like, I'd be bothered if I didn't. So, I've got it. Yay!

1. Shy That Way - Tristan Prettyman & Jason Mraz.

Found out about Tristan through my brother who is enamoured of her. She has a laid back slow delivery with a bit of a rasp to it. She puts you in a bit of a trance. This is a lovely duet with her and good ol' Jason Mraz.

2. No No No's - Junior Senior.

I love me some Junior Senior. They are just so fun and lighthearted. This is a song that warns women of falling in love with rock and roll stars, backed with a happy-go-lucky tune.

3. Flyover - Asian Dub Foundation.

I don't know much about this band, actually. It's halfway between reggae and electronica. Maybe reggonica? Haha, whatev. I was trying to find out about dub and this is what popped up. Definitely one to go crazy to.

4. Soul Meets Body - Death Cab for Cutie.

I am new to the DC bandwagon. Better late than never, I suppose. I'm L-O-V-I-N-G them right now.

5. Goodbye My Lover - James Blunt.

After Death Cab, this will be the album that I will buy. Or vice versa. Or together. I'm getting this, regardless. I'm a chick. I'm a sucker for this kind of song, although I don't have a lover to say goodbye to.

De Nova - The Redwalls

Hailing from Chicago, Illinois, The Redwalls are a four piece consisting of brothers vocalist/guitarist Logan (22) and bassist/vocalist Justin (20) Baren, their neighborhood buddy guitarist Justin Langer(20) and drummer Ben Greeno(21). Judging by their ages, a listener may assume that the boys play punk. However, The Redwalls seem to have skipped over that period and jumped straight back to emulating bands like The Kinks, The Stones, and The Beatles. This is defnitely a throwback type of band. Thumbs up to them in that department.

De Nova is a solid major label debut. Logan Baren emulates John Lennon strongly at points, especially on back-to-back tracks "Hung Up On The Way I'm Feeling" and "On My Way." It was nice to see some horns in tracks like "Robinson Crusoe" and "Thank You," and the album ends on a early Beatles-like-Twist-and-Shout-ish mode on the aptly named (you guessed it) "Rock & Roll."

Like I said, it's a solid debut. However, It seems more like a covers band. The have the emulating knob turned way up to 11. I would have wanted to hear songs that are distinctly them. Although, this could just be it. But then again, nothing wrong with that.

Rating: 7/10 Shakas.

Last.fm is a site I stumbled upon on over the summer while perusing over my LiveJournal friends' page. It's like the music lover's myspace. When you join, you download free software (the audioscrobbler) that tracks what you listen to. You also download the radio player which is neat.

After you listen to enough tracks, it comes up with musical "neighbors" that have tastes similar to yours. It's for the music geek, which I am somewhat. The elitists are there for sure. I'm there under "effinpeaz," if you want to look out for me. ;)

The Magic Numbers-The Magic Numbers

I have the funniest ways of finding new music. I first heard of The Magic Numbers from Blender magazine, when it pegged TMN's album as the CD they were "totally gay" for. I didn't jump on the opportunity at that moment, but I did download "Forever Lost" and "Mornings Eleven" for future reference.

The Magic Numbers consist of 2 pairs of siblings, Romeo & Michele Stodart and Sean and Angela Gannon. Romeo is the catalyst; the band begins with him. He is the main songwriter and has co-produced this record. He is also the lead vocalist, and his delivery comes across as warm and charming. The melodies and, more notably, the harmonies conjure up comparisons to The Lovin' Spoonful. The lyrics are meaningful as well, speaking of heartbreak and love lost enveloped by sunny day harmonies. Very Beach Boys-like.

When I first started listening to "Forever Lost" and "Mornings Eleven," I found them to be incredibly addicting. I'm a sucker for a good lyric and melody + harmony, so The Magic Numbers was a good catch. After a few more listens to their debut, I was drawn to "I See You, You See Me," a token he said/she said. Not in the argument sense, but the song is split between Romeo Stodart and Angela Gannon, who comes up from the land of background of vocals to take joint lead. The result is a story being told by two people. It's definitely a shining moment on the album when Angela takes lead vocal.

This is a good debut; promising. The harmonies are lovely, and Romeo has some impressive lyrical chops. I'm sure that another one of the songs off this album will embed itself into my musical memory; it's that sneaky. This is a band that I will keep an eye out for.

Haven't gotten into Bloc Party much, but this song is fantastic.

Just one of those bands I started listening to on a whim. They've got a very nice harmony going on. Makes me think of the Mamas and Papas, but I don't know why.

11. Nothing Lasts Forever - Echo and The Bunnymen

A few of the songs in this list deal with life changes (graduation, etc.). The first lines of this song go, "I want it now, I want it now, not the promises of what tomorrow brings..." It's a song about making the most of your time. It's not like a selfish bit.

12. Such Great Heights - Iron and Wine

I haven't seen Garden State, but I love this song and I love this version of it.

13. I Hope, I Think, I Know - Oasis

Oasis is my mainstay, and ~~cannot~~ can hardly do me wrong. This song is a uplifter, for sure. It's off a great album as well.

14. Exit Music (For A Film) - Radiohead

Whenever I was feeling particularly moody and/or serious (which happened quite a bit at the beginning of the year with it being my last semester and all), I'd get this song in...and I'd follow the above song with "No Surprises." I'm not a huge Radiohead buff, but OK Computer is definitely "up there" for me.

15. C'mere - Interpol

Had to put some Interpol on here. Easily my most played in 2005. That I am sure of.

16. Still In Love Song - The Stills

It has this lovely atmosphere to it, all love lorn and.....grey. I can do that bass bit at the chorus, and I'm pleased. Haha.

17. Never Say Goodbye - Hayley Westenra

I first heard this song at a funeral of a relative who died too young. My brother was entrusted with the task of putting a video together and he used this song. I wasn't close to the guy, but it's such a heartbreaking song in that regard. Her voice brings another dimension to the song as well.

18. 100 Years - Five for Fighting

Yeah, Five for Fighting. I have no problem saying that I like 100 Years, as opposed to that Superman song. (I like that one too, but it's hard to get a verbal confirmation of that)

19. Freakin' Out - Graham Coxon

I was doing my fair share of freaking out before graduation, for sure. Sorry for the pun.

20. I Shall Not Walk Alone - Blind Boys of Alabama

Started watching LOST. Heard this song. End of story.

21. Common People - Pulp

I could see myself jumping to this song if I was ever at a Pulp concert. But cows would jump over the moon before Pulp would ever play in Hawaii.

Just a recent discovery. Good stuff though. Yet another album to get.

Yeah, I'm a FF geek. Anyway, I was going to put The Black Mages's version of Zeromus (the final battle in FFIV) on here, but this one makes me laugh so hard. It's not the accompaniment...it's the dude singing it. I don't know what he's saying! It's like this operatic tenor singing to this metal background.

25. Worlds Apart - Jars of Clay

One of the most spiritually convicting songs for me. Powerful message.

MTV European Music Awards

Two words for the2005 MTV European Music Awards ...much better. Compared to the VMAs in Miami this year, the 2005 MTV EMAs was much more entertaining and original. It started off with Madonna performing her new song "Hung Up" while bursting out of a giant disco ball in the middle of the stage. Along with Madonna, the PussyCat Dolls and Gorillaz performed. I especially liked how they actually used 3-D animation to put the Gorillaz on stage. Very clever.

Along with the performances, I liked the host, Sacha Coen. He made a few jokes and didn't spend too much time on stage. The winners' speeches were also brief which was much appreciated. Also, the award show took quite a few breaks in between the performances and awards presentations. Usually, I'm upset when too many commercials interupt a TV program, but I think that awards shows need them since they are oftem tedious and boring for the most part.

In addition, the stage was huge, and had a regular traditional stage with a large screen in back of it, as well as a center, circular stage that went out into the audience. I very much liked the set-up of this year's awards show.

The 2005 European Music Awards lived up to its name. I was entertained and thought the whole show was well thought out. The American award shows can definitely take some pointers from their European counterparts.

For me, Oasis could always harness every thought I had of looking to the future; just musing. My mind would run rampant in the ever present haze of a daydream, and Oasis was my soundtrack. Yet another classic B-side that should have been an A-side.

2. "Common People" - Pulp

Lyrically, it's a satire on rich people who want to "act" common, when they have no idea how it's really like. I just get "inspired" more by the rhythm behind it. The song just has this pulsing driving force through it. The lyrics bolster the urgency of the song. If you ever come upon the Pulp website, it'll tell you to read the lyrics without the music. Trust me, it makes all the difference. Anyway. I'd also recommend William Shatner's version.

I once asked one of my voice teachers if Italian operas were overdramatic. Out of the arias I was learning, one was like "Oh let me die" in a minor key; the other one was "You wound me" but it was in this happy triplet thing. He said I was right Italian operas are emotional both ways. Which brings me to Nessun Dorma. Great song in itself; even AWESOMER when Pavarotti sings it. Can't help BUT be inspired. Even if he is singing about dying the next day.

4. "The Scientist" - Coldplay

In my opinion, the best Coldplay song out there. Fix You and Yellow are nice, but this is it. Achingly beautiful.

5. "Hawaii '78" - Israel Kamakawiwo'ole

Israel is pretty much the voice of Hawaii. He has long since passed on, but his music will live forever. Hawaii '78 is a lament; it's very much Hawaiian in the blood sense. Israel wonders how the old Kings and Queens of the Sovereignty would react to the commercialization of Hawaii today. Inspiring because -- jeez. Just listen to the guy.

Hey all, long time no post! The queue of albums that I must review is steadily growing. At work, I'm stuck in the Ticket Booth--by myself--so that allows me free reign on music. Before I leave for work, I throw a couple of CDs in the bag. Here's what I listened to throughout the day:

1. A mix CD entitled "Darn it, I'm sad...mix"-consisted of songs in the minor key. Started with The Beatles' "Yesterday" and ended with Led Zeppelin's "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You."

2. Lifehouse's "No Name Face".-The first one. I thought I'd give it a listen for once. I've had a burned copy of it for A WHILE. (like since, 2003 or so) I've read the lyrics, and they're deep deep deep. Good for writing a song fic to. Anyway. I had it playing and a customer recognized it. That was nice. Maybe I'll go to that gig at Kapono's.

3. "Surfer Rosa" by The Pixies.-I swear, this album grows on me each time I play it. Definitely a pioneer of a lot of music today. Definitely one I'll review soon. OH and bonus. Found my "Pet Sounds" cd in the Surfer Rosa case. Weee!

4. "Logic Will Break Your Heart" by The Stills.-Another cd that I really like. I have to play the whole thing through. It's nice.

5. "Pretty In Black" by The Raveonettes.-I have to say, I think I like "Chain Gang of Love"(their debut) better as a whole, but Pretty In Black is solid. "Sleepwalking" is probably my fave off this record.

6. "Definitely Maybe" by Oasis.-Classic. Played it like, twice through. Live Forever is iconic, Bring It On Down is massive, Columbia blows you away, and Slide Away takes you to another level.

1. "Where Is My Mind?"-Pixies(get it here)

One of my LJ friends on Live Journal mentioned the Pixies and this song. I was curious, so I downloaded the song, and loved it immediately. A nice little ~~tune~~ ~~theme~~ ode to that wonderful feeling of not being "there." I find myself asking the same question.

2. "Careless Whisper"(cover)-Ben Folds & Rufus Wainwright (get it here)

A piano and two wonderful, talented guys. I'm becoming a bigger fan of Ben's each day. I don't listen to much of Rufus's, but what I have I like. A great cover of that achingly beautiful George Michael classic.

3. "God Only Knows"-The Beach Boys (get it here)

I've just bought Pet Sounds but I've had this copy of "God Only Knows" for a few weeks now. I can't say anytning to do it justice. It's goes down smoother than smooth. It's a beauty.

4. "Mr. Suave"-Parokya Ni Edgar (get it here)

Parokya Ni Edgar is a band from the Philippines. I honestly don't understand what he's singing. I heard it on the Filipino channel here, and well, it was so catchy...I just couldn't ignore it any longer! Apparently, the song tells the story of this dashing man with a moustache. At least, that's what I gathered from my mom's on-the-spot translation.

Anyway, I DARE you to try to resist singing along. Hoy hoy hoy...

5. "Ang Huling El Bimbo"-Eraserheads (get it here)

Another Filipino band. I heard this song when I was in the P.I. "Ang Huling El Bimbo" was a massive hit for the Eraserheads, and they won an MTV South Asia award for the song. They have since then disbanded, but I was quite thrilled to get my hands on this gem. It's quality 90s alternative rock. It's in tagalog as well, so I don't know what he's saying. I'm fairly certain that "Ang Huling" is a love song. But what do i care? I like the sound.

Well, I've thought about putting more than five, but I think I will just leave it at that number for now. Not too much, but not too little. Hope you all enjoyed.

Today, I went to Tower Records by Pearlridge. I knew I would buy something.

I just didn't know how much.

I'm not going to disclose how much I spent to further my musical education, but I will tell you it was quite a pretty penny. As said on my last post, I had five albums that I wanted to get. I can now scratch two albums off that list. Next week, come October 4th, I can scratch off another.

Anyway, here's what I've gotten:

3. Turn On The Bright Lights-Interpol(yes, a hard copy!)...besides I had to play PDA for my brother....but Jon's car does NOT do that song justice.

4. Pet Sounds-The Beach Boys(finally!)

I have also gotten 2 Oasis DVDs: Familiar To Millions, which documents their back to back show at Wembley Stadium in 2000, and their special DVD documenting the 10th anniversary of the making of Definitely Maybe. Yay. Uber psyched.

I was going to post pics of each record, but to conserve space, I think I will hold on. I'll end up reviewing them anyway. Surfer Rosa will be first. I totally like it.

30 Seconds to Mars' Jared Leto

Yep, you heard me right, that's Jared Leto, and he's fronting his own band! I was watching the Late, Late Show with Craig Ferguson last night and to my surprise Jared Leto was performing with his band 30 Seconds to Mars. At first, I thought, "Man, he's gonna suck ...actor+musician usually doesn't work." To my surprise, he's a good singer AND he's a good performer. He really has a great rock musician's voice and a lot of energy (he went into the audience during the performance and rocked with them). That was really cool! I'm not really a "rock/grunge" type of person and I haven't listened to their album before, but their performance has peaked my interest. I'll give you my full review if I ever get around to listening to their album. Lazy, lazy me. Laterz!

Ah! My third attempt at a new post! The other 2(well, make it 1) are on the bench.

Right now, I'm on the iTunes store(doing my bit of legal downloading) and have come across a few tracks, which make me want to buy the album, which....have inspired me to put in a new blog entry! ha!

...and here we go...

1. Interpol's Antics-The Special Edition

Self explanitory. I love them. I don't even own a hard copy of Antics OR Turn On The Bright Lights. So, obviously, this is one of the top ones.

2. Gogol Bordello's ~~Gypsy Punks: Underground World Strike~~ (er, any one of their albums)

I read about them in a Spin magazine, and thought they looked funny(which they do). They're a multi-ethnic band (imagine slavs and thais) mixing punk with gypsy music and cabaret. I listened to a sample of it on iTunes ("Baro Foro"). I'm VERY intrigued. I'm attracted to that weird sounding crap. It was on Elijah Wood's playlist on iTunes, and that's how I listened to it.

3. Joy Division's Closer

Okay, this wasn't influenced by today's iTunes picking about. An article in Spin documented the story around Closer, and how Ian Curtis committed suicide, etc. I blame my interest in Interpol for diving into this post-punk stuff. Echo and The Bunnymen are next too, but I don't know which one. Watch out The Cure and New Order! This is a new side to music I haven't looked into.

*thinks* Hmmm...Amazon.com offers Joy Division's first two albums (Unknown Pleasures is the first one) for like, $21...intriguing...

4. Franz Ferdinand's You Could Have It So Much Better...

I'm really jazzed about their new single, "Do You Want To." They're just fun. It's funny, I read an article about them today. They said they were just going to call the new cd "Franz Ferdinand" again. Like what? Haha. I guess they changed their minds. According to the band's website, this one's out October 3rd.

5. The Beach Boys' Pet Sounds

I've been wanting this one for a while. It just sounds pretty, and apparently this is the album that inspired The Beatles to do Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Cool. Which is another album I'd like to get, but that'll be another entry.

MTV Video Awards

I know this was weeks ago, but I wanted to post my review anyway. The video awards this year, how should I say ... was boring. Except for Beavis and Butthead, they were entertaining, but the awards portion was boring. Ever since they moved it to Miami, it's been boring, boring, boring. The stars coming in the boats, and 3-D like stage, even with Diddy hosting it, the awards were boring. They were predictable, the performances were subpar (sorry, Jaime Foxx, but I saw you lip-synching most of your performance with Kanye). Nothing surprised me. All the hosts read from cue cards, everyone wore similar clothing. It was just boring.

I miss those days when the show was broadcast from California. Where the stage was just a stage and a curtain. It seemed like you could do so much with it for some reason. With the 3-D stage, it's like you can't hide anything and surprise the audience later on. Also, the stars came in outlandish outfits and tricked out vehicles back in the day. There's only so much you can do with a boat. I miss the good'ole days.

Kayne's recent trip to the political bandwagon

Recently, musicians have come together in this time of crisis to do the one act of generousity they know how to do best

...criticize. Yep, you heard me right. Kayne, Streisand, Green Day, Sheryl Crow, and the rest of them do it the best way that they can, and boy, do they do it well. It's easy to hear their comments repeated through the mouths of young people today in college and in high school who rely more on their daddy and mommy's money while blindly following their professors and teachers who have never worked an actual "real" job in the world, and march the beat of the liberal drum. So, it's no surprise that they follow the politics of their favorite music acts as well. And who better to follow than those celebrities with all their political experience in the real world. When the young people actually move out their parents' houses and start paying taxes, then their tune begins to change. But ever so slightly.

As for the liberal musicans, they are basking in all their glory. Thinking of the next million they will make while thousands of people are misplaced in Louisiana with out a home. Oh, but celebrities think about them, once in awhile. It's the only thing that keeps these celebrities from feeling guilty about the obscene amount of money they are rolling around in while others suffer. So, since they actually don't want to give up too much of their time and money, they just decide to complain about it as much as possible. And who better to pick on than the government. But that's another story.

Celebrities and musicians are people, I understand that. They do have a right to their opinion, and I understand that. What I think that they don't understand is that this nation is divided, half-liberal, half-conservative. So, when they comment on politics, it is bound to leave a bad taste in someone's mouth. My main complaint is that once a musician comments on politics, I no longer am able to enjoy their music. Instead, when I hear it, all I think about is their comments they have made against my beliefs and background. No longer am I able to enjoy the message of their music, but I am now nagged by the thought of them in the back of my head, speaking against my political beliefs that I am passionate about. That is when I stop listening to them and move onto other music.

So, please Mr. Kayne, you and other musicians, please keep your political comments to yourself. I want to actually enjoy your music. I want to hear its message. Trust me, you can have your opinion, but YOU are a public figure, and should keep us music listeners into consideration, those who actually want to hear your music, and avoid the political riff-raff. Trust me, if you want to make a difference, keep your day job.

Now That's What I Call Music 19

Now's that's what I call music 19 is good album, a cheap album compared to the amount of songs you're able to enjoy for the price of the entire CD. I bought it at Costco for $12.99 and was able to listen to 20 songs, so compared to buying these songs on iTunes, I got a good deal. A lot of the songs are our old favorites from the past few months, Hollaback Girl by Gwen Stefani, Switch by Will Smith, Girlfight by Brooke Valentine, La Tortura by Shakira, etc... I practically enjoy all the songs on the album. The only one's I didn't really care for were Slow Down by Bobby Valentino and Making Memories of Us by Keith Urban. Still, even with the 18 songs I like, I am able to get my money's worth. A good buy, a good deal, and you can still sell the CD off of eBay after you're done downloading it onto your computer and make some money off. Overall, I give it a 4 out of 5 stars.

"Catchy-as-hell Power Pop? Check. Cute guys? Check. Cute Guys In Suits? Double Check."

I was in Wal-Mart two days ago, quickly browsing over the cd titles. I was actually searching for a hard copy of Interpol's Antics, preferably the new edition that was released. My eyes stopped on The Click Five's cd. $9.72. Typical weird as heck Wal-Mart price. I thought for a second.

Me: "Ah, hell. I'll buy it."

I bought the single "Just The Girl" off of iTunes a week or so ago. I thought it was alright. So here I am reviewing the album.

I knew I was in trouble when I opened the cd and found a trading card in it. "Oh freaking-no. Teeny bopper alert!"

The album was what I expected. Nice, power pop to the extreme. Comparable to Rooney's album. I wasn't expecting too much, and I found Greetings From Imrie House to be catchy. Very catchy.

It does have a bit of an 80s power pop feel to it. If you listen to "Lies," the whole beginning reeks (in a positive way) of a homage to the 80s pop rock music scene, with the synthesized drums. The harmonies are tight, the guitars are slick and the chorus hooks reel you in(no pun intended).

Despite my heavy-listening-to-Interpol-leanings, I enjoyed this album. Good to be happy to. It's definitely not my scene, but hey, if you like power pop and cute young guys in suits....by all means, buy this.

Oh rating! Uhm, 7.5/10 shakas. That dang card.

"It could be me...that's changing..."-C'mere

First album review! Yay, me.

Well, here we go then! Interpol's Antics. I got this off of iTunes this past spring, after hearing "Slow Hands." I was actually introduced to Interpol's music through a Live Journal friend. She sent me "PDA" and "Obstacle 1" off of Turn On The Bright Lights, Interpol's debut album off Matador. At first, I didn't think too much of it. I knew she was big about them, and I gave the tracks a listen. At that point, they were a bit too mellow for me, methinks.

However, that little gesture introduced me to the band. I did know that they were somewhat more significant than the poppy stuff churning out of modern radio. So when I logged onto iTunes and saw Interpol's video for "Slow Hands," I clicked and watched. I liked the video, but more importantly, liked the song and downloaded the track soon after watching the video. Paul Banks voice, Carlos D.'s presence, Daniel Kessler's riffs and footwork(hah. :P), the steady beat from drummer Sam Fogarino...it all blended together right.

Soon after I purchased Antics off iTunes(doing my bit of legal downloading).

I like to compare my experience in listening to Interpol to that of a slow burning fire. The flame was started, but instead of blowing up...the flame just festered. It didn't die, instead the flame slowly built up.

This summer I began listening to the album more, in a quest to listen to the records that I hardly listened to. I still liked "Slow Hands" and "Evil" with it's dominant bass line would pop into my mind occasionally. THEN, "Not Even Jail" began to linger about my brain. Paul Banks' voice would just echo there. I used to think he was saying "Not even...hell."

It began to build up quickly then. The fire.

The record is almost flawless. There is a notable absence of the guitar solo, but Antics is far from lacking. In the place of a prominent guitar solo, you have a catchy riff here and there, bolstered by a solid bass line and Fogarino's drumming. The great thing about these songs is that they tend to start small, then build build build so that you're enraptured, and then slowly come down to almost nothing. Paul, Daniel, Sam and Carlos bring their parts together. Paul Banks singing and lyrics sound ambiguous. You don't quite know what he's singing about, but it sounds good.

It's an album that has me addicted to it. Interpol has got my attention. This album gets a 9/10 shakas.

Oasis-the origin of my musical obsession

"Maybe...you're going to be the one that saves me."

It only seems right that since I'm doing a music blog, that I start off with my favorite band....Oasis. I suppose I should explain just how a girl like me got into Oasis. Start this off right, yeah?

Well, then. The year was 1995. I was a high school freshman. I listened to music a bit, but most of it was the soft rock station variety, with the occasional dabble into hip-hop or whatever was popular at the time. Back then, MTV was rock-centered...no boy band in sight. There was the "gangsta rap" war going on between Tupac and Biggie, but I couldn't be bothered. It was in this period where I religiously watched MTV and VH-1...just watched music videos. There were a lot of good ones, videos that if I watched them now...would just bring me back to those days. Nada Surf's "Popular," Superdrag's "Sucked Out," "Ironic" and "Hand In My Pocket" by Alanis Morrisette, Collective Soul's "The World I Know," etc etc....the list goes on.

One of those videos just happened to be Oasis' "Wonderwall." Yes, I attribute MTV with introducing me to Oasis. In 1994, Oasis had a brief hit in the US with "Live Forever" off their debut Definitely Maybe. I liked the tune, but was not really into the rock....yet. Next year with Wonderwall. I saw the video (well, halfway through), and I slowly began realizing that I had heard this band before. The voice....Liam's...distinct. That British band...with that song.....Live Forever! Yeah! Oasis! Cool!

It took about the 3rd time watching the video, and I knew I was addicted. Oasis would go on to release "Champagne Supernova" as a single in the fall, and I loved that track as well. I didn't buy the cassette(yes, cassette) until the summer. What I did instead was take a blank cassette tape and tape the songs as they were played on the radio. Ah, the old days. Hahah. I finally did get the cassette tape of WTSMG one day after summer school. I bought a cheap calculator with it...total: $15 EVEN. I still remember that.

Then I went home.

Popped the cassette into the radio.

And listened. The first track, "Hello" started off with a faux-Wonderwall beginning. It sort of just faded in. I did have a brief impulse to just go and listen to "Wonderwall" and "Champagne Supernova," but I thought I'd listen this cassette through. So I did, and once I thought I had a defect of a cassette...

BAM!

Before I realized, the faux-Wonderwall intro was pulled back and a loud, brash guitar riff replaced it instead. When Alan White (ex-Oasis drummer) came in with the drums....I WAS HOOKED. Liam hadn't even sung a bloody word...and I knew. I KNEW this was MY band. That was the beginning of my Oasis addiction and the beginning of my foray into rock n roll.

Now, it's been 10 years. It blows my mind. They've gone up and down...but they always come back. Now, Oasis isn't as widely popular in the States. Here in Hawaii, I'd be hardpressed to find someone who knew anything outside of "Wonderwall" and "Don't Look Back In Anger." I guess I should be happy, but I don't think any hard-core [put your favorite band] fan would appreciate that I'd go up to them and be like, "I LOOOOOOVE that one song they do!" And that just happens to be the one hit that band has, that everyone knows....which probably drives that [put band name here] nuts.

I was planning on chatting on their albums, but I think this is a good start. I'll just review each album here and there. I'll just go ahead and recommend a few tracks off that WTSMG era. Download em, pay for em.
